Bio
Kayla comes from a very musical family.
From her grandfather to her youngest cousin, they all have
musical abilities. So, at the tender age of two her mother
realized God had placed that gift in her and she acted on
it. Her mother recalled a day when Kayla was two years old
and she sang her a song, “You Are My Sunshine,”
while rubbing her head. Kayla later went on to perform her
first solo, “I Am A Promise,” at the Holy Bible
Baptist Church, in Houston, Texas. From that day forth her
mother began to develop her talent by enrolling her in schools
with music programs. Kayla attended Garden Villas Music
Academy elementary school. There she participated in the
choir as well as the band where she played the clarinet
and the flute. She did not continue playing instruments
but she did continue singing. For junior high she attended
Sidney Lanier Middle School where she participated in the
Pup Choir her 7th grade year. She became one of the charter
members of the A Capella Angels group as well as named Member
of the Year during her 8th grade year.
Kayla wanted to continue and grow in her
love for music so she attended Ross Shaw Sterling Senior
High School in Houston, Texas and that is where she began
to develop a talent and love she didn’t know she had.
This love was for classical music. While attending she participated
in the Sterling Silver Chorale Choir and Ensemble where
she was introduced to this wonderful style of music. During
her involvement in the choir and ensemble she was afforded
the opportunity to compete in the Universal Interscholastic
League Competition and received these awards:
• Division 1 Songs Only competition: Gold Medal and
#1 Rating on Regional Solo and Ensemble (10-12 grades)
• Division 1 State Solo: Silver Medal (10-12 grades)
Not only did she participate in the UIL
competitions but these as well:
• Doric Temple Shriner’s Regional Scholarship
Recipient: 1st Place
• Miss Congeniality & 2nd runner-up State Level
Shriner’s Scholarship Pageant
• Texas Battle of High School Choirs: Soloist of the
Year in 2000
While she was a freshman in high school
she became a charter member of Gary Mayes and Friends in
Christ (now known as Gary Mayes and Nu Era). This is when
she received first hand experience in being a recording
artist
After high school she attended Huston-Tillotson
College in Austin, Texas (now University) where she was
a member of the College Choir that futher nurtured her gift
in singing classical music. Although she had a strong affection
for classical music her first love was and always would
be Gospel. She knew God had called her to reach the masses
through the singing of His word so she decided to continue
to develop it and this is when she recorded with nationally
recording artist Chester D.T Baldwin and the Music Ministry
Mass Choir (M3). She also recorded with Adrian Reed and
Anointed Praise, a local group. In October of 2003 she was
given a chance to participate in a wonderful opportunity
and she placed:
• 3rd Runner-Up in the Stellar Awards
Gospel Talent Search
(Houston, Texas Auditions)
She not only furthered her calling in Austin,
but she also met and grew in love with an amazing preacher
of God’s word, Min. DeChard I.H. M. Freeman. They
met in August of 00’ and married in November of 04’
and they have two beautiful sons, Micah D.A. Freeman and
Caleb D.A. Freeman.
They are now working on, along with friends, starting a
record label to be released in August o6’, Preachaz
1st Records. They are also working on her debut project
entitled “Time to Surrender” to be released
in August of 06’ as well!
God has been faithful and Kayla wants the world to know
just how wonderful life can be when you know Jesus!!!!
Her mission: To heal the broken, strengthen
the weak, encourage the saints, and reach the lost by proclaiming
the Gospel through song.
